What Is A Bucket List? – A Goal List For Your Heart’s Desires
One of my favorite movies is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Watching it, I felt like it was speaking to my soul. It is a funny reminder that there is more to life than just work. That we need to step outside our comfort zone sometimes to create the mystery, romance, excitement and adventure that we crave in life. I loved that the main character, Walter Mitty, worked for Time Life, whose motto was “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”
I found that after watching this movie, I started to mentally create a bucket list – or a list of things I wanted experience and places I wanted to go. And I’ve completed quite a few things on my list – like travel to Iceland and snowmobile on a glacier, photograph the Northern Lights, gone parasailing in Cabo San Lucas, photographed the Milky Way galaxy in Big Bend, Texas, explored around Banff, Canada and published my Ignited Life Planner on Amazon.com!
As I check off an item, I seem to add more! Here’s a picture of my current list…
So, What Exactly IS A Bucket List?
A bucket list is a list of experiences, places or accomplishments you want to achieve in your life. It’s called a ‘bucket list’ because it’s a list of things to do before you die or ‘kick the bucket’. In reality, it should be called a life list, because it’s a list that helps define and add color and dimension to your existing life. It’s really a list created more from your heart, than your mind. While many bucket lists include travel wishes, they don’t necessarily have to be all travel related. You can have lots of new, different experiences, even in your own backyard.
Why Should You Make A Bucket List?
Author Vicky Jones of New Love Times gives some amazing benefits from making (and most importantly, completing) a bucket list. Her reasons resonate with my own personal experience with my bucket list, including:
To Learn and Satisfy Curiosity
Oftentimes, something may spark your interest and lead you to search for more answers. Life is about listening and following your heart’s desire. Your mind can’t control everything!
Bring Adventure Into Your Life
Does everyday seem like ‘Groundhog Day’? Then maybe you need to change things up and bring some excitement and drama into your life.
To Discover Talents You Never Knew You Had
About a year ago, I had on my bucket list to learn how to play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on my ukulele. I had just started learning how to play and couldn’t even coordinate how to move my hands in different motions, much less sing at the same time, and yet now…after practicing on my own almost every day for a few minutes, I can not only play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” but at least 30 other songs!
To Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
Nothing says getting out of your comfort zone like getting out of the county. Suddenly you start to feel self conscious, even with things that you wouldn’t even think twice about at home. And getting out of your comfort zone forces you to put your faith and trust in others…and to open your heart to new experiences. I remember spending some time in Bangkok, Thailand while on a school trip and I needed to get somewhere. I had to ask the hotel concierge to write down where I needed to go and just trust the cab driver to take me there. I had literally no idea how to pronounce the address, much less write in Thai where I needed to go.
To Be A Kid Again
Trying new experiences allows you to be a kid again – experiencing the joy, wonder and excitement of something new. Usually by the time you get to be an adult, it’s rare to have new experiences. But when you venture out and purposely go out of your way to try that new cuisine, go on that new ride at the amusement park, or go jumping at a trampoline park on a date night, you’re saying ‘yes’ to life’s experiences.
To Never Run Out Of Interesting Conversation
Having broader life experiences give texture and color to your life and gives you something to talk about with others. Which person would you rather speak to a cocktail party – the workaholic tax accountant or the guy who spent a full year traveling around the world?
To Be Exposed to Different Ideas and Ways of Doing Things
Vicky did not have this on her list but it is something I thought I should add, as bucket lists are often synonomous with travel. Travel is such an important education, in different customs and cultures and ways of doing things that I try to bring my ten year old son with us, particularly when we travel overseas. I just find exposing him to different people and ways of doing things helps expand both his and my perspective and the beauty of this world.
So, with all this mind, I have just launched a new product – Ignited Life Bucket List. While Ignited Life Planner is a goal system for your mind’s achievements, the Ignited Life Bucket List Journal is a goal system for your heart’s achievements.
It’s a place to keep those exciting, daring, even downright scary things you dream of doing ‘someday’ and to document what happened with your own words and pictures. Click here to learn more about Ignited Life Bucket List Journal!
